frequently asked questions...

What is an electric car?

Electric cars draw electricity from batteries to power an electric motor to propel the vehicle, generating zero emissions.  The batteries are charged using standard household electricity and electricity captured by regenerative braking.

Can I drive the electric car out of the Town of Telluride?

GEM vehicles are electronically limited to a top speed of 25mph to meet Federal Low-Speed Vehicle requirements.  GEM vehicles are street legal on roads posted 35mph or less.  The speed limit on Hwy. 145 outside of town limits reaches 45mph.  Please note, the speed limit within the Town of Telluride is 15mph.  We offer delivery to your home or hotel in Mountain Village (call for more information).

How do I charge the GEM electric vehicle?

We deliver the GEM fully charged.  For multiple day or weekly rentals, we will show you how simple it is to charge the battery.  The battery is charged with an onboard charger that plugs into a standard 110-volt outlet.  The GEM can be charged anytime of day but the ideal time to charge is at night when the demand for electric power is at its lowest.

How much does it cost to charge a GEM vehicle?

To fully charge a GEM vehicle in Telluride from a completely discharged state, it takes approximately 5 kwH of power and costs about 60¢.  (Local cost per kwH is currently .121293.) We prefer to charge our electric vehicles at night when the demand of electric power is at its lowest.
